Thermostats - So Many Choices!

 
There are many types of thermostats to choose from!  How can you know which one is right for you? Here are a few of our favorite options, covering every price range and style preference.  We like the digital thermostats for a more modern look, and Honeywell is our preferred brand. They have proven to be both cost-effective and very reliable.

The Basic Kind

If you're looking for a thermostat just to get the job done, Honeywell makes a basic non-programmable digital model for about $25.00.  It is square with only a few buttons: heat/cool/off mode, and up/down temperature buttons.  The temperature is displayed in the little digital window.  You set the temperature desired, but don’t forget to turn it up or off when you leave!

Programmable

Next, we have several mid-priced programmable, digital thermostats offered by Honeywell.  These types have a large display screen, and the temperature is controlled by selecting the options right on the screen, similar to an iPhone.
If having a plain thermostat in view on your wall is just not your decorating style, one model we tested features a full color display screen and comes with a SIM card port so that you can upload your family photos, turning the thermostat into a little electronic frame!  In these models, the temperature is still displayed in the corner, and you can choose to turn the picture setting on and off.  It also features a custom message option, which is perfect for welcoming your spouse home from work each day or warning them not to touch the settings!

Thermostats with Wi-Fi!

Another digital model we use works with the wireless internet in your house.  Once the thermostat is installed, you can download the corresponding app for your iPhone or Android.  This app allows you to adjust your A/C from a distance.  This is especially useful when returning home from work or vacation, as you can choose to adjust the temperature an hour or so before you return.  As always when taking advantage of technology, make sure both your wireless internet and your app are assigned a password in order to protect your privacy.

Speaking of which, if you love technology and don’t mind spending a bit extra on a thermostat, the Nest is for you!  Nest can actually learn your temperature preferences, so it doesn’t need to be programmed.  It also can be controlled wirelessly from an app, and senses when no one is home, adjusting its settings as needed.  It is round, slim, and stylishly modern.
